McKnight Road Repair Continues on Schedule
By Roger Healy
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) confirms that McKnight Road paving and repair work is on schedule as area drivers continue to battle heavy traffic.
Crews began work two weeks late due to weather in February 2024 with an estimated completion date of Spring 2025.
PennDOT spokesperson Yasmeen Manyisha confirmed that the project is still on schedule despite those delays.
Manyisha also stated, “The weather is still a factor and [a] few unforeseen issues have come up.” Those issues have not interfered with the project timeline.

Construction will continue throughout the winter as able. Manyisha stated, “There is a good chance they may have to go on a winter hiatus, but if Pittsburgh sees a milder winter, crews may continue to work.”
Road crews are primarily working overnights to minimize traffic impact. However, times and locations of lane shifts, closures, and active work can be unpredictable. Those traveling through the McKnight Rd. construction zone should be aware of signage and remain alert for changing conditions.

The roadway and retail hub, often referred to as McKnightmare Road, has long been known for frustrating traffic jams.
North Hills residents, including La Roche students and faculty, are anxiously awaiting the project’s end.
Joseph Pompeo, an English major in his junior year, lives on campus and commutes to work at Ross Park Mall in the afternoon.
Joseph said his drive only takes an extra five minutes during rush hour right now, but he anticipates future issues. “It hasn’t impacted me yet, but I expect it to.”
Jackson Decheck, a former commuter student now residing on campus, has lived in the North Hills for eight years and says bad traffic is nothing new. “Last year I was a commuter who mainly drove on McKnight Road. It was always annoying when there would be immense traffic because of construction on McKnight.” Jackson said he now avoids the construction zone as much as possible.
Alternate routes on Babcock Boulevard, Old Perry Highway, Siebert Road, and Thompson Run Road continue to see heavier traffic.

Updates are also available through local broadcast news channels. KDKA, WTAE, and WPXI frequently provide updates, changes, and progress of road work throughout the Pittsburgh area.
