La Roche inducted the 2010-11 Men’s Basketball team into the Hall of Fame Class of 2022.
Rather than a player or coach, it was the first time the school inducted a whole team into the Athletic Hall of Fame.
The story of the 2010-11 Redhawks is a bittersweet one.
In 2010, Coach Scott Lang died during practice. Harry Jenkins, then interim coach, took over the team. The Redhawks, who were on a six-game win streak before Lang’s death, won the next ten games.
Dr. Linda Jordan, an English professor at La Roche, reflected on her time with the team.
“We felt like if we lost, we let Lang and the school down,” she said. “We were carrying the hope with us.”
Dr. Jordan also spoke on her role, and how the players needed structure after Lang’s untimely passing. “It was a stressful time,” she said. “[The players] needed a lot of stability to provide structure and continuity.”
Laron Mann, 2011 senior co-captain of the team said, “Coach Lang was always a hard-nosed coach. He knew what he wanted. Knew how he wanted us to play.”
La Roche went on to beat Penn State Behrend in the AMCC championship, closing out the season in storybook fashion.
The team’s 2022 induction signifies perseverance and hope in an ever-changing sports world.
